Interview with Aion's Lead Designer   Dear Mr. Jee, On behalf of the Aion community at AionSource.com, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. We've been following this game as a community since 2006, and we are very excited for the retail launch in September. Aion's future is also very important to us so we would appreciate any answers you can give to the questions below. Thank you, -The AionSource.com Community 1) Any chance of adding in the much-requested dual-targeting UI feature? I love this feature in other games as it makes playing a support character that much easier and also paves the way for some very interesting and unique new ability options that require both an...

1) We've been told that 24/7 customer support is on the way and the new filter has really cut down spam in chat channels, but we are still seeing goldsellers sitting for days and days in personal shops in major cities (where they cannot be autoreported) with nothing being done to them. Can you elaborate if/when we will see in-game GMs on all servers taking care of these advertisements and, hopefully, bots as well? Our CS team is always hard at work providing a lot of support to different areas of the game. Because of their increased efforts, many players have already seen the results you?re talking about from RMT spamming in chat. We are also fighting other forms of exploitation (hacks, bots, etc) and while they...

One Month In Q&A Session at MMORPG From www.MMORPG.com MMORPG.com: Would you describe the initial launch of Aion to the North American market to be a success? Brian Knox: So far so good! The response since launch has really exceeded our expectations, and players continue to keep logging in. As you know, an MMO doesn't stop at launch so we still have a long way to go. We learned a lot in those first few weeks and feel we're on a great path now to continue to build off of the great experienc   MMORPG.com: Can you explain what led to the decision to allow what many considered to be outrageous queue times directly after launch rather than to add more servers or take some other measure to be su...

Hey guys, Brian Knox took some time with MMORPG.com to better explain some of the early access issues we've all been seeing. Have a read and post your -constructive- feedback below. :) From www.mmorpg.com: MMORPG.com: Players experienced what were described by some of extremely long queue times to take part in Aion's head start on Sunday. Can you speak to this? Brian Knox: With [Sunday]'s launch, we saw a massive influx into the game when we opened the servers for Head Start. It's important to remember that this initial rush is due to everyone trying to get into the game at the same time - this isn't a scenario that's likely to be repeated regularly since it's really just about that initial ...

What was the original concept of Aion? We set out to make Aion a global product that would appeal to the entire world. We wanted something that would appeal to the North, the West, the East, and the South, and have the core concept of the game be able to resonate with gamers around the world. There are a lot of MMOs out there like World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer Online, what separates Aion from the rest of the other MMOs? We've kinda taken the approach of polish and refinement, and making sure we get the best features from everything and add our own flavor, our own twist to it. So you'll see some cool additions, like flight in Aion, that add it a...

News image

Korean MMORPG Aion is set to launch in North America on September 22nd and in Europe on September 25th. Blend Games had a chance to badger the busy NCsoft development team with some questions about the game and here's what they had to say. The fact that many MMORPG's require a monthly subscription and a heavy time investment can often make these players reluctant to try a new MMO. What do you think this game can offer players that their current MMORPG's can't? Players definitely have choices when it comes to MMOs, or any game for that matter, so it was key for us that we offer game mechanics and experiences that they’re not necessarily going to find in any other game. ...

Big game update hits beta just before launch, find out what is included! As launch quickly approaches, NCsoft is working towards the smooth implementation of the Aion update 1.5 that will put the North American and European version of the game up-to-date with the Korean version.     While it is no doubt no easy task to squeeze in nearly a year of additional live game content before a major launch, North American players are getting the benefit of well tested content and a fuller end game experience. The 1.5 update has been added to open beta and continues to undergo optimization but for those who haven’t had a chance to get into beta, here is the scoop on what the finished version of the game will have avail...

Introduction to the Book of the Asmodians It wasn’t always like this. At one time the two sides of this world were as one and we were united as brothers. We looked the same, we had the same ideals and we shared a common purpose: to protect the Tower of Eternity. When they failed, they destroyed everything. Our world, our people, were ripped apart. This half of the world is what we Asmodians call home. After the Epic Cataclysm we were thrust into darkness and the unknown, where we had no other choice than to adapt and to survive. Each and every day our world taught us something new, opening our eyes to new possibilities and giving us the unwavering strength to rebuild our lives once again. It...

Introduction to the Book of the Elyos One year ago this very day, they came. Those fiends, those cursed Asmodians. They appeared from nowhere, leaping through one of our portals only a few moments after our legionnaires had left. The cowards. They butchered us where we stood, and though our bravest tried their hardest to resist their attacks, what real hope did they have against these immortals? I ran. I have no shame in saying it, I ran and hid while the Asmodian invaders slew my friends, neighbors, and entire family. Someone needs to remember acts like these, for it is through these actions that a rational being can see which of our people are honorable, and which are wicked. I fled and hid, and when I retu...

Aion Articles | nyx | Wednesday, 2 September 2009 | NHITS 133

News image

The other day, I was reading through some of the forums and I noticed an interesting thread about Aion being too linear in its game play. I thought this was an interesting topic as some people were saying that it should be more of an open / sandbox style game. While on the other side, people were expressing that they were fine with having some structure and guidance in the game. This got me thinking about what I feel an MMO world should be like. Looking at traditional pen and paper role playing games and how a story unfolds, there might help in understanding about the right way to have an MMO story play out. Standard RPGs usually have between three and six players and one ...

This is a compilation of a few threads containing information on cure potions and abnormal conditions. The people who wrote the posts are cited or linked to below. Abnormal conditions are spells cast on a player that usually (always???) have a damage over time component. These conditions are sometimes removable by Lesser and Greater Healing potions as well as a Cleric's ability to remove abnormal effects (Cure Mind I - Skills - Aion). Even with this ability, clerics still have a use for the potions as discussed here: Clerics and CC pots. It is suspected that the difference between Lesser and Greater Healing potions is the level of the abnormal condition that may be removed (please check on this somebody). There are two kin...

I have made a first attempt at compiling a "how to" guide to explain what previous closed beta testers should be doing when they upgrade from the closed beta Aion client (version 1.0.2) to the open beta Aion client (version 1.5.0). I initially started writing this to help my friends who were getting confused, however I wondered if it might be helpful to others to have. The aim of this guide is to explain how the "recommended update method" works, as provided by NCSoft via BitTorrent. It should be understood that it is not recommended to use the NCSoft Launcher itself to obtain the full patch as doing so appears to be unreliable. I have probably missed things, so please help me check this for ac...

Aion Articles | khebeln | Wednesday, 26 August 2009 | NHITS 7934

News image

NCsoft indeed put a lot of efforts in promoting AION, its master title that has entered its sixth closed beta. Now, various keys-give-away campaigns have pushed AION to an unprecedented new height. WOW, the current King of MMORPG, has been busily protecting its throne as well by releasing updates for its second expansion pack released last year. This means WOWers are expected to initiate a new round of BOSS-beating competition again. The graphics of WOW, the dominating MMOPRG at this moment, cannot, of course, be ranked as terrible. This argument, actually, can be supported by the fact that many players put its snapshot of in-game picture with all effects on as wallpaper. However, when compared with the emerging AION, it's slightly inferior. Based ...

Aion Articles | khebeln | Wednesday, 19 August 2009 | NHITS 122

News image

It's been one year since I first saw Aion: Tower of Eternity and those wings I admired are about ready to take flight in the US. Developer NCSoft has learned a lot since the massively multiplayer online game went live in Korea last year and they've integrated as much as they could into version 1.5, which will be the game that launches in the US this September. First up is instancing; 1.5 adds 14 new instances to players past level 20, a scoring system to all instances to encourage replay-ability and a whole lot more story to pad it all out. NCSoft takes their storytelling very seriously – especially since they're dealing with localization – so they've put professional writers on their adaptation team and skipped auto...

Is there any concern that, as has happened to other recent MMO launches, the hype will get too high for the game and that players will be disappointed when the game finally launches? Players know that we're delivering them a polished, top quality game with server stability, interesting content, social features on the web, and future updates. Yes, the pressure is definitely on for us, though! We want to make sure Aion delivers the best MMO experience possible for gamers. It's a goal we're committed to. Learn some tricks to flight and combat for Aion. One of the most popular selling points for Aion is the fact that you can take to the air and engage in aerial combat with your enemies. Though flight is limited to specific areas, it’s best to try and master the mechanics once you ascend as it will become a major part of the game, especially when you enter the Abyss. However, there are other small things you can pick up along the way to help save your neck in a pinch and come out of a fight alive when you clearly should have been fertilizer for the landscape. Why can I only fly in certain areas? To elaborate on what Savanja wrote in her initial flight guide,...

Learn all about the Templar. The Templar is the defensive power house of the warrior archetype. Unlike the gladiator, the templar relies more on defensive skills and survivability as opposed to a mix of defensive and offensive-based skills. With skills such as “Armor of the Empyrean Lord”, the templar is able to walk into many battles and outlast his foe through sheer defensive force. Strength: Very strong defensively and has a lot of complementary skills that increase survivability. Weakness: The templar doesn’t pack a great punch offensively. While the templar can hold his own and outlast many enemies, he can’t finish them off too quickly. Templars take a different approach to tanking than gladiators. This class is built more for defensive oriented skills that increase its survivability, maki...

Between the levels of 20-24, the grind starts to pick up more and more each level.  The percentage of your levels EXP you are able to get through quests starts to gradually go down in this range for a few reasons.  The first ...
